Our daily lives run on routines that depend on keeping accurate time, from brewing morning coffee to powering global markets. The story of timekeeping is the story of progress, stretching from cave shadows to space-age atomic clocks.
Ancient societies turned to the stars and the Sun long before the first clock ticked. Egyptians placed huge stones and obelisks to track shadow movements, creating sundials by 1200 BC. Greeks, Chinese, and Egyptians also devised water clocks, or clepsydras, that marked time using the steady drip or flow of water. These devices helped schedule irrigation, plan planting and harvest, and organize festivals.
Religious ceremonies relied on consistent timekeeping too. In ancient China, incense clocks released fragrant smoke to guide prayers and rituals. Simple candle clocks, burning down at known rates, allowed people to track nighttime hours. Early calendars—built on lunar or solar cycles—kept entire communities in sync, shaping daily routines and long-term planning.
The Middle Ages sparked fresh ideas. Europeans built giant mechanical clocks with gears and weights, many installed in public squares or church towers. The verge escapement, an innovation from the late 13th century, let these mechanical clocks measure passing hours more evenly.
